Paddle, Paddle....

Derek's birthday adventure of paddleboarding left him wanting more - seriously, he loved it! So on another sunny summer day (the kind of day that you just HAVE to take advantage of in Washington and be outside) we headed back to Olympia for round two.

Derek paddleboarding in front of the Capital.

And me...kayaking happily along beside him. I opt for the kayak in order to spare my husband the task of having to help me for what would have been numerous times of falling off the paddleboard. It would not have been good...at all.

So let me tell you why my paddleboarding career lasted all of five minutes. (Remember, I told you there was a story behind this kayak.) I am not ashamed to say that I am not much of a risk taker. I don't try a ton of new things. And when I do try something, I have to be at least 80% sure that I will succeed at it. So paddleboarding seemed like a great idea for Derek's birthday and I was all gung ho to go for it.

And then I stood on one...in the water. Not sure what I was expecting. It's a board on the water. Water is not solid...I should've known this. And as I stood there 2 inches from the dock on this paddleboard, I knew one thing for certain - I was going to fall off...multiple times. It wasn't that the board was going to shoot out from under me, I have every confidence in the board. But my wobbly, knocking knees were telling a different story altogether. And so I listened and decided to go with what I knew I could do - kayak.

I'm not giving up paddleboarding yet though, I just need to be somewhere in shallow water where I can practice and get more comfortable. Maybe next summer. :)

So anyway...

Here's my perspective from my kayak looking up at my paddleboarding husband standing on the water.

Hooray for kayaks!

And here we are together, best I could do. :)

His Twenty-Sixth Birthday!

In other summer news...somebody had a birthday!! Guess who it was?

That's right - my man is now 26! The cool thing about 26 is that I first started celebrating birthdays with Derek when he was 13 so now he's officially spent half of his life with me, lucky guy. ;) Just kidding, I am well aware that *I* am the lucky one!

As per usual, I made his favorite butter yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting.

And since candles are sold 24 in a pack and now he is 26 I found these cute "Happy Birthday" to use instead and we lit them up!

Happy Birthday Handsome!

Making that wish...

...so much for using these candles next year, ha! It's actually kind of sad-looking.

I planned a couple of fun adventures for Derek's birthday week. We started out with a trip to the movies to see one of his favorites, Batman. Oh...excuse me..."The Dark Knight." :)

Awesome movie!

He also got to have his favorite General Tso's Chicken from his favorite restaurant - apparently the love of Chinese cuisine is genetic among Thomas men. :)

The next day we went out to play some mini golf, lots of fun!

And Derek got to try out his new birthday shoes. Okay, so maybe mini golf isn't exactly "trying them out" but at least he got to wear them, right?

Later in the week, we had one more new birthday adventure - paddleboarding! Derek loved it!

And there is a reason behind why I am sitting in a kayak and not standing on a paddleboard, but I'll save it for later so as not to hog the spotlight of Derek's birthday blog post.

It was a beautiful day at Percival Landing!

Happy 26th birthday my love! You are simply wonderful!!

SO Full...

Are these not the two cutest, sweetest faces you've EVER seen??

My boys - Destin & Daniel...so precious.
This picture is tattooed in my mind. I think about it all the time.

These two entered my life when they were ages 2 & 1. I first started to baby-sit them and then became so in love with their family, that I spent as much time as I could with them. It was my second home and I cherished every minute I spent there.

We have so many great memories! To this day, every time I wear the color yellow, I think of Daniel who once picked out yellow pajamas for me with monkeys all over them because "Lellow" was his favorite color, and because I taught him to say at the zoo that "Those monkeys look just like me." (Imagine a 2 year old saying that in the cutest little southern drawl you've ever heard...heart melted.)

Or I think about 3 year old Destin who would stay awake until Daniel fell asleep and he saw my shadow pass by his door on my way to bed. He would jump from the top bunk and knock so sweetly on my door to ask if he could sleep in my room because his "bubba" was already asleep. And then he would always ask to "hold my hair" while he fell asleep. I never once said "no" to either of those requests. :)

But these cute little baby faces didn't stay babies (even though they both PROMISED me that once they turned eight, they would start going backwards on their birthdays!!)

There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do for these boys!

But they grew up. And let me tell you, as wonderful as they were as little fellas, they are even more amazing teenagers and I love them to pieces!

In fact, this summer Daniel was baptized on July 15 and Destin preached his very first sermon on July 29th and once again, I was able to be home to witness it!! I could not have been more proud!

Destin titled his sermon "That Your Joy May Be Full" and used 1 John 1:1-10

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched —this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Here are the five points of his message...

For your joy to be full you must:
1) Have eternal life (verse 1)
2) Tell others (verse 2)
3) Have fellowship with the Father, Son and Spirit (verse 3-4)
4) Meet the conditions of fellowship (verses 5-7)
5) Keep sin confessed (verses 8-10)

Destin did such a wonderful job letting the Lord use him. I can only imagine what great things he is going to do! I can't wait to see them. Maybe in a few years, he'll decide he wants to church plant in the Northwest...is it okay that I am just going to start praying for that right now? ;)

Have I said before how proud I am of these boys? I am...very much.

My joy is SO full!

I love you Destin & Daniel! You have such big pieces of my heart with you always.

Love,
Kitty

Baptized!

I think the hardest thing about living so far away from family is missing out on not just the little things but some of the big things, too. We knew that would happen when we made the decision to move to Washington. It's expected.

But it sure makes me happy when we are able to experience those things and this past trip home I got to be there for a big thing, a super special event. My cousins, Jared & Zack, (more like nephews) both made the decision to trust Jesus as their Savior and they were baptized on July 22nd - and I was there to see it!!

Is this not the cutest? He was so excited!

Bro. Everett practicing with Zack.

Bro. Pete & the boys...silly Jared. :)

Seriously, the kid couldn't stop smiling. I kept telling him to make sure he closed his mouth when he went under the water, ha!

Zack-a-roni went first...

Then it was Jared's turn...

Here they are with their moma (my "G") after getting all dried off.

So proud of these boys - and so happy I got to be there to witness such a special moment in their lives.
